Rewiring The Brain For Creativity, Compassion, & Ease
We can make our minds so like still water that beings gather about us that they may see, it may be, their own images, and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even with a fiercer life because of our quiet.
~ W. B Yeats
Mindfulness is the ability to know what is happening in our minds and environments, and taking skillful actions that enhance the well-being of all involved. By cultivating the ability to observe our minds with kindness and curiosity, we gain the freedom to choose our response rather than react based on habitual patterns of thinking.
The biggest benefit of mindfulness is to wake up up from living our lives on autopilot. We learn to create space around our thoughts, emotions, and decisions. In this space we allow for newer perspectives and creative solutions to emerge instead of going in for the first solution that comes to mind.
About The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR)
MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the UMass Medical School to help people learn to relate to whatever is happening in their lives with ease, compassion, & clarity. Mounting research indicates many benefits including:
- Enhanced ability to manage stress
- Greater energy & enthusiasm for life
- Improved self-esteem
- More focus
- Emotional regulation
- Interpersonal benefits
- Managing pain

How Mindfulness Has Impacted Past Participants
“I just finished a six session executive series at Downtown Mindfulness with Shalini Bahl. I wanted to learn meditation and stress reduction techniques and she taught me so much more about opportunities to take in the world and embrace opportunities. I highly recommend Shalini and Downtown Mindfulness classes to anyone with an interest in self improvement and greater perspective.
How Shalini’s class most benefited me was in reminding me to consider the impact of my words and actions and passion and fire on other people. How we don’t need to stop delivering messages we want to convey – but how we can more thoughtfully consider carefully where the other person is truly coming from, what your situational bias and skewed outlook may be, what you really want and what is the best way to earn the situation that you want.” ~ Cinda Jones, President, W.D. Cowls Inc., Land Company
“Shalini presented to over 500 educators for us and not only kept them captive for an entire day, she inspired, brought joy, artfully and tactfully rolled with technology difficulties and was an absolute delight. Her diligence and care before the presentation in working with us was the best I’ve ever experienced. She truly wanted to make this work for us and our (large!) team and delivered beyond expectations. Thank you Shalini for giving us a day that we won’t forget!” ~ Meghan Crowe, Director of Research and Development, Little Sprouts
“After my first experience with Shalini as an instructor for the Mindfulness and Leadership course at UMass I decided to enroll in her 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) course. I cannot speak highly enough of this course or of Shalini as the instructor. The class was small which made it a really intimate setting. The information was invaluable to me and has changed the way I live my life on a daily basis. I learned how to pay attention to the typical reactions I have to certain situations and as a result I have been able to react less and act intentionally more often.
Shalini was truly an inspiration to me. She was willing to honestly share some of the challenges that she had faced in the past so that we (her students) could understand how to explore challenges that were happening in our own lives. She does not just teach mindfulness, she lives mindfully, which means that she teaches from the heart and from experience. Taking her MSBR course is one of the best things I have ever done.” ~ Jessica Osgood, PhD Candidate in Accounting, Isenberg School of Management
