Shalini Bahl-144Find a nurturing space in the heart of Downtown Amherst, where you can sip a cup of warm tea, learn mindfulness practices and skills and be part of a community of people interested in living with wisdom, compassion and creativity. Read about the six mindfulness skills here.

“I just finished a six session executive series at Downtown Mindfulness with Shalini Bahl. I wanted to learn meditation and stress reduction techniques and she taught me so much more about opportunities to take in the world and embrace opportunities. I highly recommend Shalini and Downtown Mindfulness classes to anyone with an interest in self improvement and greater perspective.

“How Shalini’s class most benefited me was in reminding me to consider the impact of my words and actions and passion and fire on other people. How we don’t need to stop delivering messages we want to convey – but how we can more thoughtfully consider carefully where the other person is truly coming from, what your situational bias and skewed outlook may be, what you really want and what is the best way to earn the situation that you want.” ~ Cinda Jones, President, W.D. Cowls Inc., Land Company

About The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR)

There is much evidence to show the structural and functional changes in the brain that take place after this eight-week program for better focus, problem solving, and empathy among other benefits in the participants. Shalini led a great workshop that taught mindfulness practices to reduce stress and increase happiness and efficiency. This method is well researched and was recently on the cover of Time Magazine. Shalini is a very kind and caring teacher and comes with significant experience both in mindfulness and in business.- Sanjay Nawalkha, Professor and Chair, Finance Department of Business School
Shalini has combined a dynamic curriculum with practical application to make her Mindfulness Based Personal Branding class an absolute stand out amongst MBA classes as well as a must take for the business professional.- Michael Salwen, Finance Director, LEGO USA
I cannot begin to express my gratitude for what you have done for the members of our Health and Wellness program. The Mindfulness and Meditation component that you developed for us and helped us integrate into our program has quickly become the foundation of our program. It has truly changed lives! Our members have reduced the stresses of daily life, are happier, more focused, and are getting more enjoyment from life. Here is an excerpt from a letter from one of our members: `I did not realize the extent of the stress I was feeling and the effects it was having on my health until it was gone. I was churning up inside. My mind never rested; I was busy worrying about everything… past, present, and future. I was never unplugged from the constant barrage of interruptions technology brings. Now I am in the present, relaxed and content. The Mindfulness and Meditation presented in this program has truly saved my life.` Thank you Shalini for your patience, compassion and intelligence.- Bob Jacobs, Founder, Mind First Health & Fitness
Shalini presented to over 500 educators for us and not only kept them captivated for an entire day, she inspired, brought joy, artfully and tactfully rolled with technology difficulties and was an absolute delight. Her diligence and care before the presentation in working with us was the best I've ever experienced. She truly wanted to make this work for us and our (large!) team and delivered beyond expectations. Thank you Shalini for giving us a day that we won't forget!- Meghan Crowe, Director of Research and Development, Little Sprouts
The first time I had Shalini as an instructor was at a Mindfulness and Leadership class at UMass. To be honest I didn't know much about mindfulness and had almost no experience at practicing mindfulness. Shalini brought just the right amount of mindfulness practice into the class. I understood the mindfulness practices but didn't feel as though I was in the intensive 8 week mindfulness class. Shalini explained how each of the mindfulness techniques impact our leadership abilities and are expressed through our actions as leaders. I especially benefited from the activities that we did in class. Through the activities I got a chance to experience first hand how mindfulness can impact my experience and effectiveness as a leader. The class was not your typical course where you read about how to do something. We actually practiced the mindfulness techniques, and then we connected those practices to leadership skills such as speaking to a group. We got to see the difference in our leadership abilities when we were `just going through the motions` and when we were truly present in the moment. It was amazing to see how much more inspiring and effective everyone was when they were mindful and present. Finally I want to emphasize the role that Shalini played in this course. While she was the instructor and lead us through the meditations and activities, she was, and did, so much more than that. I felt like I truly connected with her. She was a fun and energetic instructor, she brought a lightness to the course. More importantly, Shalini made me feel like I was the only person in the room when we were speaking. She truly cares to help others and that made the class feel like a personalized experience. She is the reason that this class was so effective.- Jessica Osgood, PhD Student in Accounting at Isenberg School of Management

What Our Clients Say

I just finished a six session executive series at Downtown Mindfulness with Shalini Bahl. I wanted to learn meditation and stress reduction techniques and she taught me so much more about opportunities to take in the world and embrace opportunities. I highly recommend Shalini and Downtown Mindfulness classes to anyone with an interest in self improvement and greater perspective.- Cinda Jones, President, W.D. Cowls Inc., Land Company

Mindfulness 2.0: Beyond The Breath, 8 Mindfulness Skills To Transform Your World
Nov 30 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Silence retreat is on Sunday, Nov. 19th

Mindfulness 2.0
Beyond The Breath: 8 Mindfulness Skills to Transform Your World

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?mindfulness 2.0-4

—Mary Oliver

We are drawn to mindfulness for different reasons. Underlying all our reasons is the fact that we care – about our selves, our loved ones, and the world we live in. However, living in a world that is fraught with injustices, suffering, and unforeseen challenges can feel arduous. It takes courage to meet suffering – ours and others’ – with an open mind and heart. It takes fierce compassion to want to do something about it.

Whether you are dealing with a challenge – an inner crisis, a problem at work, or social change – or working on a new project or goal, it is tempting to take the path of least resistance. Mindfulness 2.0 provides the skills to approach our life’s work with the right intention, understanding, and effort so we don’t fall into our default patterns, despite our growing awareness. These skills systematically enable us to integrate mindfulness into our everyday lives. We not only refine our awareness but also cultivate wisdom and skillful habits to actively create the life we want and the kind of impact we want to see in our lives and the world we live in.

The eight skills developed in this program are taken from the original Buddhist teachings to liberate us from our default tendencies and live our fullest potential as human beings. I have further studied each of these skills from a scientific perspective to extract their relevance for our current times.

  1. Awareness
  2. Compassion
  3. Curiosity
  4. Energy
  5. Appreciative joy
  6. Inner calm
  7. Concentration
  8. Equanimity

Each week will focus on one skill – what it means, why it’s important, challenges to practicing that skill, and mindfulness/life practices to cultivate each skill. Participants will be invited to pick a project or personal goal that they will be applying the 8 skills to. For example, I am applying the 8 skills to finish writing my book and compete in my first 5K race for Safe Passage.

The program will include:

  1. Meeting once a week for 2.5 hours
  2. Accountability partners
  3. Dialog and journaling
  4. Silence retreat (a different format from the MBSR program)
  5. Workbook (based on the book on Mindfulness 2.0 that I am working on)
  6. New guided meditations for each skill
  7. A community of like-minded people committed to living an intentional, empowered, and richer life

How is Mindfulness 2.0 Different From MBSR

Contemplation of four foundations of mindfulness

In MBSR, the focus was on awareness of three foundations – thoughts, body, and emotions. In 2.0, we will expand our awareness to the fourth foundation – other phenomena including the hindrances to living mindfully and eight mindfulness skills to live a fulfilling life.

Awareness, Wisdom, & Skillful Habits

In addition to awareness, we will introduce wisdom – right understanding and intentions – and skillful habits as a way to integrate our mindfulness practice into real life interactions. This is where the rubber meets the road – how is your practice changing who you are in your actions and interactions? Even if our mindfulness is not fully established, wisdom and skillful habits provide the right perspective and intentions to take actions with the the bigger picture in mind.

Balancing the Energizing & Calming Skills

Beyond awareness and compassion, which we focused on in MBSR, in 2.0 we are actively cultivating six other skills:

  1. Curiosity
  2. Energy
  3. Appreciative joy
  4. Inner calm
  5. Concentration
  6. Equanimity

The first three are energizing skills and the last three are calming. Each of these skills helps to balance the excess and deficient tendencies in our mindfulness practices and lives.

Beyond bare awareness, getting more involved

When contemplating the first three foundations of mindfulness, like we did in MBSR, we maintained bare awareness. Now, with the addition of the fourth foundation, the instructions change. We are invited to get more involved. We are not only bringing awareness, but also right understanding and skillful actions to actively promote well-being for ourselves and others involved.

The above additions are a few of the differences that bridge the gap between our intentions and the actions/behaviors that manifest in our lives. In other words, 2.0 will help translate our sitting practices into habits and everyday skills that allow us to create a life of fewer regrets, better decisions, and more fulfilling relationships.

Summary of Benefits

Some of the benefits of taking this program:

  1. Build each of the 8 mindfulness skills individually
  2. Better integrate mindfulness into everyday life
  3. Bring clarity to decision making
  4. More energy and enthusiasm in general
  5. Deal with challenges with more equanimity and understanding of the bigger picture
  6. Deeper understanding of mindfulness from scientific and traditional Buddhist perspective.
  7. Lead – your life, project, or organization – with more impact and more ease

The Cost

The pricing is the same as for the 8-week MBSR class and you can read about it here.

Who Is This For

Mindfulness 2.0 is a secular program for people who have taken an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class or an equivalent program and would like to deepen their mindfulness practice.

More specifically, this program is for you if you sometimes wonder:

  • What does it mean to be truly free?
  • Am I my most authentic self?
  • Am I living to my most creative, most compassionate, and greatest potential?
  • How can I have more impact without burning out?
  • Can we take care of ourselves, each other and the world without getting overwhelmed?
  • How can I live a life of abundance while being of service to others?

Go To The Limits Of Your Longing By Rainer Maria Rilke

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.

Book of Hours, I 59

My Personal Journey & Intention

My hope for offering this program is for us to explore what it means to live – learn, work, relate,  play – with more energy, joy, and creativity that takes into account the well being of all involved. In the MBSR we started to explore mindfulness as a way to live with more awareness of our autopilot behavior and make more skillful choices. Yet, as we all have experienced, there can be a gap between our experience of mindfulness in meditation and how we act in life. In this series, we will systematically explore the 8 mindfulness skills essential to meeting life with authenticity, intentionality, and wisdom.

This program is an outcome of thousands of hours of learning from many mindfulness teachers, personal practice and contemplation, and researching the science underlying each of the 8 mindfulness skill. I am grateful for the many opportunities to learn from my failures to act mindfully in challenging situations and to explore how to bridge the gap between my sitting practice and how I show up in the world. This program and workbook is a creative expression of my yearning to discover a better way to live that was never taught in school or any where else. Through an intimate inquiry of our immediate experience we can learn to access more information and tap into our natural intelligence to make better choices than we would based on our automaticity.

Very much like the MBSR class,  learning in this program is shaped by each of us showing up authentically. It takes a community to live an examined life. We need all the support we can get to live mindfully in a culture that thrives on automaticity. I look forward to embarking on this next mindful adventure with you. Please email me – shalini@remindingproject.com – in case you have any questions or concerns before committing to the 8-week Mindfulness 2.0 program.

Mindfulness is a practice & way of being fully present & alive to each moment with kindness & curiosity

About The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR)

MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the UMass Medical School to help people learn to relate to whatever is happening in their lives with ease, compassion, & clarity. Since then more than 100 academic studies have examined the physiological, psychological, and inter-relational benefits of mindfulness. There is much evidence to show the structural and functional changes in the brain that take place after this eight-week program for better focus, problem solving, and empathy among other benefits in the participants. MBSR is Not

  • Relaxation, although you may start living with more ease

I just finished a six session executive series at Downtown Mindfulness with Shalini Bahl. I wanted to learn meditation and stress reduction techniques and she taught me so much more about opportunities to take in the world and embrace opportunities. I highly recommend Shalini and Downtown Mindfulness classes to anyone with an interest in self improvement and greater perspective.- Cinda Jones, President, W.D. Cowls Inc., Land Company
